OpenAI has begun expanding its Applications team under the leadership of Fidji Simo, who assumed the role of CEO for Applications on August 18 after transitioning from her previous position as CEO of Instacart. The company announced on Tuesday that it is realigning its executive structure by appointing a new Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Applications and acquiring a product analytics firm valued at $1.1 billion.
The targeted acquisition is Statsig, a firm renowned for its A/B testing tools and analytics solutions aimed at enhancing product performance. OpenAI plans to bring on board Statsig’s founder and CEO, Vijaye Raji, as the new CTO of Applications. In this capacity, Raji will oversee product engineering for ChatGPT and Codex, managing various facets including infrastructure and product integrity, as stated in a recent blog post from OpenAI. His direct reports will include Simo.
According to the blog, once the acquisition is completed, Statsig’s employees will transition to OpenAI, while the firm will maintain operations independently from its Seattle base. OpenAI emphasized that it would adopt a careful approach to integrating the two teams, prioritizing continuity for existing clients and allowing Statsig’s personnel to concentrate on their work.
Further changes in executive roles were also disclosed by OpenAI.
Srinivas Narayanan, who currently oversees engineering and played a key role in the development of ChatGPT and related APIs, has been elevated to the newly created position of CTO of B2B Applications. In this role, Narayanan will direct all business-related applications, serving clients ranging from startups to government entities, and will report to OpenAI’s COO, Brad Lightcap.
Additionally, Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, will make a shift toward the research sector. He is set to establish a new team as the Vice President of AI for Science, collaborating closely with Mark Chen, the Chief Research Officer. With this transition, Weil’s previous product team, which includes the head of ChatGPT, Nick Turley, will now report to Simo directly.
