Google is introducing new AI-driven language learning tools in its Translate application. This beta feature, which is now being rolled out, allows users to receive personalized language lessons tailored to their proficiency level and specific language objectives, such as preparing for a trip abroad.
Currently, Google Translate supports English speakers wishing to learn Spanish and French, while also assisting Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers in practicing English. By selecting the new Practice button within the app, users can indicate their skill level and the context of their learning. Furthermore, they can choose from predefined scenarios, covering areas like workplace discussions, daily communication, and social conversations.
Using its Gemini AI models, Google will generate lessons based on user input. For instance, if a user indicates they possess intermediate Spanish skills and wish to interact with their host family during studies abroad, the app may suggest a scenario to practice discussing mealtime. Users can engage by verbally practicing with the app or listening to relevant conversations while identifying familiar words.
According to Matt Sheets, a product manager at Google, “These exercises track your daily progress and help you build the skills required to communicate in another language with confidence.” The approach is reminiscent of that used by language-learning platforms like Duolingo, which also customizes lesson plans based on individual learning levels and goals.
In addition, Google has unveiled a live translation feature within the Translate app, enabling users to engage in conversations with individuals speaking different languages. This feature translates spoken language into the recipient’s preferred language, utilizing AI-generated transcriptions and audio outputs. Unlike the live translation available on the Google Pixel 10, the Translate app does not render the AI’s audio to mimic the user’s voice; however, Sheets noted that the company is exploring various options for this functionality.
The live translation feature is currently accessible in the US, India, and Mexico, supporting communication in more than 70 languages, including Arabic, French, Hindi, Korean, Spanish, and Tamil.
