During this week’s Made by Google event, the company unveiled a variety of new hardware. However, attention quickly turned to the unexpected introduction of a new smart speaker thought to be powered by Gemini. Recent reports from Android Headlines suggest that this device is indeed real and will feature multiple color options, as well as compatibility with a Google TV Streamer.
Android Headlines has stated that additional images of the speaker have surfaced, showcasing four color choices: a vibrant red, a soft green, a classic black, and a clean white. Unlike previous models, this speaker presents a light at the base rather than on the top, accompanied by a fabric finish.
The speaker is said to incorporate innovative features, including the ability to pair with a Google TV Streamer to provide spatial audio for television. This capability seems to mirror technology found in Apple’s HomePods, which can connect to Apple TV. Speculation also suggests it will support connectivity with televisions running the Google TV operating system. Additionally, it is reported to feature new natural voice options, sound detection for unusual incidents like breaking glass or smoke alarms, and compatibility with Matter.
The speaker will utilize Gemini for its smart functions, moving away from the reliance on Google Assistant. This shift follows Google’s announcement of Gemini for Home set to be available on existing Nest devices starting in October. The new suite will include a subscription tier with indications of features that may only be accessible through this paid model.
Android Headlines has dubbed the upcoming device the “Home Speaker,” although its final name and release date remain uncertain. However, a launch coinciding with the rollout of Gemini for Home in the fall appears plausible. There’s also anticipation surrounding an updated smart display, considering Google’s Nest Hub line hasn’t seen an update since 2021, and recent developments suggest that Amazon’s Alexa Plus operates most efficiently on devices equipped with screens.
