Anthropic has unveiled an innovative feature for its Claude chatbot, enhancing its artificial intelligence capabilities. The San Francisco-based tech company announced on Monday that Claude will now have the ability to remember and refer back to previous conversations with users. This update allows users to seamlessly continue discussions from where they left off, alleviating the hassle of manually sifting through past interactions to revisit incomplete projects. Currently, this feature is being deployed among select paid subscription tiers.

Claude Can Now Refer to Previous Chats

The announcement came via a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, from Claude’s official account. The chat reference capability is now accessible to subscribers on the Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, with indications that the Pro plan will receive the feature shortly afterward. However, it remains uncertain whether this functionality will be extended to users on the platform’s free tier.

While the ability to reference earlier conversations is not unique to Anthropic, as competitors like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini already offer this functionality to all users, including those with free accounts, it remains a valuable addition for Claude. These systems typically employ a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) process, allowing the chatbot to bring in data from past interactions based on user prompts or its own assessments.

Traditionally, Anthropic has been more measured in rolling out new features for its chatbot. The introduction of the chat reference feature follows the company’s previous enhancements, such as two-way voice conversations and web search capabilities, added in May 2025. This new development is expected to significantly aid users who rely on Claude frequently, as it eliminates the need for endless scrolling to locate past conversations. Through this feature, users can inquire about earlier discussions, enabling Claude to both retrieve relevant information and build upon prior tasks.

In a related note, last month, Anthropic implemented weekly rate limits for its paid subscribers, a move prompted by a minority of users who were gaming the previous policy of resetting rate limits every five hours. The firm highlighted that some users were running Claude Code continuously, leading to usage levels that could escalate into tens of thousands of dollars.

Despite the promise of the new chat reference feature, some users are voicing concerns that accessing information from dense conversations may cause them to reach their rate limits more quickly. The company has not clarified whether the feature will consume tokens during use.
