Instagram has implemented new restrictions on its Live Broadcast feature, limiting access to users with public accounts that have at least 1,000 followers. This change means that individuals who lack significant public followings, such as smaller influencers and content creators, are now unable to host live videos or engage in real-time with their audiences. The company has not provided any explanation for this new policy, which follows previous announcements regarding the teen account restrictions.

Instagram Live Feature Now Only For Those With 1,000 Followers

As outlined in their Help Centre, Instagram users must have both a public profile and a minimum of 1,000 followers in order to initiate a Live Broadcast. This limitation has currently been confirmed in India, according to Gadgets 360, yet there has been no official rationale provided from the platform. This restriction affects users on both Android and iOS devices.

The new rules effectively prevent lesser-known content creators from participating in live interactions, impacting their ability to connect with followers. Without official clarification on the implications of this change, concerns are raised regarding its potential effects on smaller businesses and content creators who rely on direct engagement to build their audiences. Many Instagram influencers cultivate their followings through daily interactions, and the new policy could hinder their growth and engagement.

This is not the first instance of Instagram placing limitations on the Live Broadcast feature. Previously, users with Teen Accounts were required to obtain parental permission to go live unless they were over the age of 16, at which point they could enable the feature themselves. For teenagers, this function is deactivated by default to promote a safer online environment.

In other news, Instagram’s parent company, Meta, has rolled out additional safety features for teen accounts, aimed at enhancing the messaging experience on the platform. The tech company announced that teens will receive notifications regarding when their messaging counterparts joined the platform, along with essential safety tips to consider when interacting with unfamiliar users.
