Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy has announced plans to integrate advertisements into conversations users have with the Alexa+ voice assistant. The enhanced AI-driven version of Alexa was revealed in February and is currently available to users throughout the United States. According to Amazon, millions have already adopted Alexa+, which boasts several new features and improved capabilities.

Alexa+ Might Place Ads Mid-Conversation

During the company’s second-quarter earnings call on Thursday, Jassy discussed Amazon’s achievements during the quarter that ended in June. He highlighted the advanced intelligence of the current Alexa experience, emphasizing its enhanced ability to process and manage tasks through AI technology, as reported in transcripts from Seeking Alpha.

Jassy also mentioned that millions of users in the U.S. now have access to Alexa+, with plans for a wider rollout expected in the coming months. A global expansion of the voice assistant is anticipated later this year. He noted that Alexa+ is being utilized more frequently than its earlier version, indicating a positive reception among users.

As discussions with stakeholders progressed, Jassy indicated that there may be future opportunities for incorporating advertising in longer, multifaceted conversations. He suggested that this approach could enhance user experience by aiding discovery while simultaneously generating revenue for the company.

Looking ahead, Jassy sees the potential for introducing a subscription model related to the voice assistant, although he made it clear that this concept would not be implemented in the immediate future. At present, Alexa+ is available at no cost to Amazon Prime members, while non-members face a monthly fee of $9.99 (approximately Rs. 875) for access.

Amazon has characterized Alexa+ as capable of addressing user inquiries, facilitating smart home device operations, and engaging in conversations. The assistant can intuitively locate and play music from various streaming platforms including Amazon Music, Spotify, and Apple Music, even with vague instructions. Additionally, Alexa+ offers services such as tracking ticket availability for events, ordering groceries, booking appointments, and making reservations.
