According to reports, OpenAI is set to launch its advanced artificial intelligence model, GPT-5, in August. The new model will feature three variants: a base version, along with nano and mini options. While detailed information about GPT-5 remains scarce, sources suggest it will signal the conclusion of the o-series model. OpenAI aims to integrate the technologies of both the GPT-series and o-series into a single model designed for native reasoning capabilities.

GPT-5 Will Incorporate a Built-In Reasoning Mode

Rumors surrounding GPT-5 have circulated since last year, initially suggesting that the development of this large language model (LLM) was under the codename Orion. This speculation was later clarified; the Orion designation actually referred to GPT-4.5, which was released in February.

That same month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman outlined a roadmap for GPT-5 in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He indicated that GPT-4.5 would be the final model that does not utilize a chain-of-thought (CoT) approach, stating that all subsequent GPT-series models will inherently determine when to engage in deeper reasoning.

Altman further shared that users on the free tier of ChatGPT will have unlimited access to GPT-5 at a standard intelligence level, while Plus and Pro subscribers will benefit from enhanced intelligence options. He also mentioned that GPT-5 will integrate all OpenAI tools, including voice capabilities, Canvas, Search, Deep Research, and others.

Despite these insights, specific details on GPT-5’s release timeline have been limited. Recently, Alexander Wei, a member of OpenAI’s technical team, indicated in an X post that “we are releasing GPT-5 soon.” Current reports from Technology News suggest that the release could happen as early as next month.

According to unnamed sources familiar with the company’s plans, GPT-5’s launch will follow the release of upcoming open-source models. The new model is expected to include both nano and mini variants, with the base and mini models available through ChatGPT and API. The nano version, however, will be exclusive to API access, as outlined in the report.
