Elon Musk, CEO of X, formerly known as Twitter, revealed on Thursday plans to resurrect the beloved video-sharing platform Vine in a new “AI form,” nearly nine years after it was shut down.

The announcement was made via a post on X, but specific details regarding the project’s development remain unclear. A request for further clarification by Reuters met with no immediate response from the company.

Musk has hinted at the possibility of reviving Vine several times since taking over Twitter in 2022. This included engaging users with public polls on X regarding the return of the much-loved short-form video app, which enjoyed significant popularity during the 2010s.

Vine was launched by Twitter in January 2013, enabling users to produce and share brief video clips limited to six seconds. The app quickly became a favorite among video creators, amassing a large following before Twitter announced its discontinuation in late 2016.

The brief video format may be particularly advantageous for AI-generated content, as current tools in the AI video generation space tend to produce shorter clips, while longer videos often incur higher production costs.
