OpenAI introduced an innovative artificial intelligence feature for ChatGPT on Friday, named Projects. This functionality enables users to organize their chats into specific folders, facilitating discussions on similar topics or related contexts. Projects also allow users to attach files, drawing a comparison to Google’s NotebookLM. The company indicated that while paid subscribers will gain access to this feature in the coming days, educational and enterprise users can expect to use it by January 2025.

Updates on Projects for Paid Subscribers

The launch of Projects marked the seventh day of OpenAI’s 12-day shipping initiative. This feature was revealed during a live stream and subsequently shared on the company’s official X (formerly Twitter) account. Currently, Projects is accessible to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users worldwide. Free users will eventually receive this feature, although no specific timeline for its rollout has been provided.

Essentially, Projects serves as an organizational tool that empowers users to categorize their conversations by topic. This function is particularly advantageous for individuals who frequently inquire about similar subjects and prefer not to provide full context repeatedly. For example, a user might initiate a Project called “Research Assignment,” instructing the chatbot to respond with expertise in that particular domain, eliminating the need to restate the guidelines for each inquiry within the same Project.

This feature is also poised to enhance research capabilities, akin to Google NotebookLM. Projects allows users to upload files, enabling ChatGPT to consider the context of these documents in its responses. This functionality facilitates inquiries regarding extensive texts or academic papers, enhancing the user experience in research settings.

Upon availability, the Projects feature will be prominently displayed in the left margin of ChatGPT’s web interface and desktop application. However, users will not find it on the ChatGPT app for Android or iOS at this time. Users can create new folders by clicking the ‘+’ icon next to the Projects header, with the option to personalize titles, add emojis, and customize folder colors.

After folder creation, individuals can input custom instructions or upload relevant files to facilitate more accurate chatbot responses. The interface also provides users with access to their previous chats for convenience, alongside the ChatGPT Search and Canvas features within each Project. Newly created folders will be visible under the Projects header on the left margin.
