Ubisoft announced on Friday that Assassin’s Creed Shadows has surpassed one million players across all gaming platforms on its launch day. Although the company did not release specific sales figures for the open-world action role-playing game, the milestone highlights the game’s immediate popularity upon release. Assassin’s Creed Shadows was launched on March 20 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Achieves Milestone

The game’s developer expressed gratitude to players in a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), celebrating the one million player mark on launch day.

“It’s not even 4 PM here in Canada and Assassin’s Creed Shadows has already passed 1 million players! Thank YOU from the bottom of our hearts for joining this adventure in Feudal Japan. We are beyond excited to start this journey with you,” the statement read.

Although specific sales figures were not disclosed, the one million players include participants across PC platforms (such as Steam, Ubisoft Connect, and other storefronts), as well as on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. The game is also accessible through the Ubisoft+ subscription service.

Current data from Steam’s Top Sellers chart, which ranks the highest-grossing games on the platform, suggests that Assassin’s Creed Shadows is performing well commercially, as it occupies the top position on the chart.

According to SteamDB, the title achieved a peak of 46,531 concurrent players within its first day of release. While these numbers are impressive, they pale in comparison to Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wilds, which hit one million concurrent players upon launch. Clarity on the sales trajectory of Ubisoft’s latest title is expected to emerge over the following weeks.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows faced delays prior to its release, having pushed back its launch from November 2024 in order to refine the game further. This decision followed the underwhelming performance of two of Ubisoft’s previous AAA titles, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws.

The success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is particularly crucial for Ubisoft, which has encountered financial challenges in the past year. The company’s stock value plummeted by over 40 percent in 2022, prompting discussions among the founding Guillemot family regarding potential buyout talks with Tencent and other investors.
