WhatsApp is in the process of developing a new Audio Chat feature, according to recent reports. The Meta-owned messaging platform has been seen working on this voice-centric functionality in the latest beta update for Android. Although the feature is not yet available to beta testers, WhatsApp has been actively enhancing its user interface and functionalities in recent updates to improve the overall experience for its users.
A report from WABetaInfo highlights that the recent beta version for Android, designated 2.23.7.12, contains references to this new Audio Chats feature. It is expected to be integrated within the conversation window of WhatsApp users.
The anticipated feature may be accessible through a three-dot menu button located in the conversation window, as suggested by a screenshot shared by WABetaInfo. The screenshot illustrates a waveform icon positioned next to the three-dot menu in the current WhatsApp beta update for Android.
Further details from the screenshot indicate a red “end call” button for active calls and additional blank space that could potentially accommodate other features. This space might be used to visualize the waveform of ongoing conversations, according to the report.
Specific functionality details of the new Audio Chats feature are currently limited. While it has been identified in the latest Android beta, it is also projected to be made available for iOS devices, as WhatsApp aims to provide uniform features across different platforms.
In addition to Audio Chats, WhatsApp is reportedly enhancing its audio capabilities by working on a feature that allows users to send audio messages that can be played only once, reminiscent of the “view-once” option for images and videos. The platform is also exploring the introduction of a short video messaging feature on iOS. However, no official timeline has been announced for the release of these features to users.
