Google has introduced a new feature for its Gemini chatbot, enabling Google Home users to send broadcast messages. This capability was highlighted last month during a preview of upcoming enhancements for the Google Home web application and is now being rolled out to users. This feature strengthens the integration of Gemini with the Google Home platform, potentially in anticipation of the planned transition away from Google Assistant on Android later this year.

Gemini Can Now Broadcast Messages via Google Home

According to an announcement from Google community manager Anish K. on the company’s support page, this new functionality allows Gemini AI to utilize Google Home’s Broadcast feature, which was previously exclusive to Google Assistant. This feature enables users to deliver voice or text messages across various connected Nest speakers or smart displays, effectively functioning as a home intercom system.

The update allows Gemini to broadcast messages to all Google Home-connected devices, while giving users the option to target specific rooms or devices. However, the feature is contingent upon having connected Nest speakers or Google smart displays available in the network.

Accessing the broadcast feature is straightforward through the Gemini mobile app on smartphones or tablets. Users can instruct the AI to send a message or record a voice note for broadcasting. If there is no connection between Google Home and the Gemini app, users will receive a prompt to enable the necessary extension. Following this, Gemini will seamlessly utilize the platform for delivering the message.

Possible broadcast prompts users might use include statements like “Broadcast I’m on my way home,” “Broadcast to the living room, it’s time for homework,” or “Find a recipe for gazpacho and broadcast it on the kitchen display.”

However, users should be aware of certain limitations regarding this feature. All related speakers and smart displays must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network, although this does not apply to the smartphone used for broadcasting. Additionally, all devices need to be logged into one Google account or be part of the same Google Family group. It is also important to note that broadcasts are one-way communications, with no option for two-way exchanges. Lastly, third-party speakers or displays are not compatible with this feature.
