Jack Dorsey has unveiled a new decentralized messaging application named Bitchat. This platform is designed for peer-to-peer messaging and operates using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networks. According to Dorsey, Bitchat aims to provide a more secure messaging option, utilizing end-to-end encryption to protect user communications. The app does not require an internet connection, user accounts, or phone numbers for its functionality.

Features of Bitchat

In an announcement made on X, Dorsey referred to Bitchat as a “weekend project.” More comprehensive information about its workings is accessible through a whitepaper hosted on GitHub. Currently, the application is in beta testing through Apple’s TestFlight program, although all available slots were filled rapidly following the announcement.

Bitchat utilizes BLE mesh networking technology, which allows users to send messages directly to one another when in close physical proximity. Each device in this network can function as both a client and a server, enabling messages to be relayed over distances of up to 30 meters through a multi-hop delivery system.

Since Bitchat operates without the need for internet connectivity, it is less susceptible to censorship and network disruptions, as noted by Dorsey.

The app is characterized as decentralized, meaning it lacks a single point of control or a centralized server, eliminating any dependency on traditional infrastructure. Messages sent via Bitchat are designed to be ephemeral, residing in device memory by default, with automatic caching for delivery when the recipient becomes available.

Bitchat also incorporates a tiered message retention feature; regular messages are set to expire after 12 hours, while those marked as favorites are saved indefinitely. The app employs robust end-to-end encryption, utilizing the Curve25519 elliptic curve and AES-GCM authenticated encryption algorithm as part of its security framework.

Importantly, the platform requires no phone numbers, email addresses, or permanent user identifiers to function, according to Dorsey.

Bitchat also includes features reminiscent of other messaging services, such as the ability to mention specific users to alert them about new messages. Additionally, users can create topic-based rooms, akin to channels found on platforms like Discord, which can be secured with passwords for enhanced privacy.
