OpenAI has remained relatively reserved regarding the anticipated launch of its next-generation artificial intelligence model, GPT-5. However, recent comments from company executives have started to shed light on what users might expect from this forthcoming release. According to a statement from an OpenAI official, the upcoming large language model (LLM) could integrate features from both the GPT and o-series models, suggesting enhancements in reasoning capabilities alongside support for multiple modalities.

GPT-5 Could Be OpenAI’s Most Comprehensive AI Model

Romain Huet, the Head of Developer Experience at OpenAI, spoke at the Viva Technology conference held in Paris recently. A video from this session was posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) by Tibor Blaho, an engineering lead at AIPRM. During his presentation, Huet emphasized that with GPT-5, OpenAI is striving to create what he termed a “net new great frontier model.”

“The breakthroughs in reasoning from the O-series, alongside advancements in multi-modality from the GPT-series, will be unified in GPT-5,” he stated.

This announcement is not entirely unprecedented; earlier, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had expressed interest in merging the GPT and o-series in 2025 in an X post. Furthermore, Altman has hinted at the potential discontinuation of the o-series, leaving it uncertain whether this unification would occur with GPT-5 or be reserved for future models.

Additionally, there are indications that the GPT-5 model may incorporate an integration with the Operator AI agent. In a Reddit discussion, Jerry Tworek, OpenAI’s Vice President of Research, noted that the goal for this upcoming frontier LLM is to be so omnipresent in features that users won’t need to switch between different models frequently.

Tworek pointed out that beyond outperforming previous models across various benchmarks, GPT-5 could also be enhanced through the Operator AI agent. For those unfamiliar, the Operator is a Computer-Using Agent (CUA) that performs a variety of tasks autonomously on users’ devices and online. This tool was first introduced in January and subsequently rolled out to Pro subscribers in February.

While an exact release date for GPT-5 remains unconfirmed, Altman recently hinted in a live stream that the model could launch during the summer months. With only a couple of months remaining in the summer season, the AI model is anticipated to debut in either July or August.
