TikTok is in the process of creating a new version of its application tailored for American users, as it prepares for a potential sale to a consortium of investors, according to a report by The Information released on Sunday, which cites anonymous sources.
President Donald Trump stated on Friday that discussions with China regarding a possible TikTok agreement would be initiated early next week, either Monday or Tuesday.
Trump expressed optimism about the negotiations, mentioning that the United States is “pretty much” on Technology News of finalizing a deal concerning the TikTok app.
The new version of the TikTok app is set to be launched in U.S. app stores on September 5, as per the report.
In a related development, Trump recently pushed back the deadline for China-based ByteDance to divest TikTok’s U.S. operations to September 17.
The report also indicated that TikTok users will eventually need to download the new application to maintain access to the service. However, the existing app will remain functional until March of the following year, although this timeline is subject to change.
As of now, TikTok has not responded to requests for comment from Reuters, which has been unable to verify the report independently.
Earlier this year, talks were underway to separate TikTok’s U.S. operations into a new firm primarily owned and managed by American investors. This plan was put on pause after China revealed it would not give its approval following the announcement of substantial tariffs on Chinese imports by Trump.
Trump suggested that any arrangement will likely require approval from the Chinese government.
