Instagram is developing an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) feature designed to transform how users edit their videos. This AI-driven editing tool leverages Meta’s Movie Gen AI model, which is an experimental initiative capable of generating video content from textual descriptions. Unlike traditional video creation tools, this feature will enhance existing footage of real individuals captured on camera, enabling users to modify aspects such as attire, backgrounds, and overall appearances.
Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, previewed the forthcoming enhancement in a recent Reel, where he discussed its functionalities and demonstrated some of its potential uses. He emphasized that the AI video editing tool is currently in the works, with plans for a possible launch next year.
In the one-minute video, Mosseri showcased whimsical alterations that the tool could execute, such as changing his outfit, adorning him with a gold chain, and inserting a hippopotamus lounging in a swimming pool in the background. The demonstration also illustrated the tool’s ability to combine various effects, showing Mosseri positioned in contrasting environments, from a snowy mountain to a desert.
In his video caption, Mosseri highlighted that the AI editing tool is powered by Meta’s Movie Gen AI model, which was first introduced in October. This multi-modal model encompasses four specific functions: video generation, personalized video generation, precise video editing, and audio generation. It aims to create videos that include synchronized audio, although it is not yet accessible to the public.
“I’m super excited about Movie Gen, our early AI research model that will let you change nearly any aspect of your videos with a simple text prompt. Hoping to bring this to Instagram next year,” Mosseri wrote in his caption, expressing enthusiasm for the upcoming feature.
It seems that the developing AI tool primarily utilizes the precise video editing capabilities from the Movie Gen model. Meta’s announcement outlines the ability of the model to perform targeted edits, whether that involves adding, removing, or replacing elements, as well as implementing broader changes like modifying backgrounds or styles. Importantly, the AI model retains the integrity of the original content by focusing solely on the relevant pixels.
