Google has introduced the Battery Performance Programme for the Pixel 6a, mandating an update to Android 16 for all users of this device. While newer Pixel models, such as those in the Pixel 6 through Pixel 9 series, have already received the latest version of the Android operating system, the Pixel 6a has been left out—until now. This significant update will begin rolling out to the Pixel 6a later this month.

Upcoming Android 16 Update for the Pixel 6a

According to information available on a support page, the rollout of Android 16 for the Pixel 6a is scheduled to commence on July 8, categorized as a mandatory automatic software update for devices identified as “Impacted Devices.” This action aims to reduce the risk of battery overheating, a concern that has surfaced among users.

With this update, Google will implement critical battery management functions for the Pixel 6a. Once the device reaches 400 charge cycles, it will experience a decrease in battery capacity and charging performance.

However, Google emphasized that these battery-related adjustments and new features will not become active until reaching this charging threshold.

For users whose Pixel 6a is designated as impacted, notifications will be sent when the device approaches 375 charge cycles. These users might begin to notice changes, including diminished battery capacity and slower charging speeds. Additionally, fluctuations in the battery level indicator may occur as the device adapts to its modified capacity, but such changes are anticipated to be temporary.

Participants in the Battery Performance Program will have access to complimentary repairs. Alternatively, users may choose to receive cash compensation or a discount on their next hardware purchase at the Google Store.

This initiative follows several reports of battery problems with the Pixel 6a earlier this year. In February, a user posted images online revealing a swollen battery that had caused the screen to bulge. Later in May, another incident involved a report of a Pixel 6a allegedly exploding, attributed to a similar battery issue.
