Meta Platforms has been implementing widespread account bans that are impacting users on its various social media platforms. Frustration has grown among users, particularly those who subscribe to the Meta Verified service, as they report unsatisfactory experiences with customer support. Despite Meta’s assurances of providing enhanced account assistance for its premium subscribers, many have criticized the service as ineffective.

Account Bans and Customer Dissatisfaction

A recent report from TechCrunch reveals that users of Meta Verified are receiving inadequate relief from customer support regarding wrongfully suspended accounts. These suspensions have impacted users on Facebook and Instagram, as well as within Facebook Groups, often without any clear explanation. Subscribers are paying around $14.99 per month (approximately Rs. 1,300) in the United States and Rs. 699 in India for the service.

While the company touts “access to direct account support” for Meta Verified users, many feel that customer support fails to deliver, leaving them locked out of their messages and business profiles. With no option for phone support and malfunctioning appeal links, the automated responses provided to users are regarded as unhelpful.

Though the precise reasons for the numerous bans remain unclear, speculation suggests that they might stem from deficiencies in Meta’s AI systems, which seem unable to distinguish between valid content and potential breaches of policy, indicating existing moderation challenges.

The company has only released a brief statement acknowledging the issue of account suspensions within Facebook Groups, referring to it as a “technical error.” For issues on Instagram, Meta acknowledged the situation by stating, “We’re aware that some of you are having issues accessing your Instagram account. We’re looking into it and apologize for the inconvenience.”

The report highlights that these account suspensions have significantly harmed both businesses and individuals, with many losing years’ worth of messages and media uploads. This has sparked outrage among users, prompting some to consider legal action, including potential class-action lawsuits.

petition on Change.org has emerged, calling on Meta to address the issue of “Wrongfully Disabling Accounts with No Human Customer Support.” To date, over 25,000 people have signed the petition, urging the company to rectify its AI systems, restore access to suspended accounts, and enhance customer support services.
