Google has introduced a feature for Workspace users that allows them to access “Gems,” which are tailored versions of its Gemini AI assistant focused on specific tasks, without needing to open the Gemini application. Users can now find Gems directly in the side panel of Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drive, and Gmail, enabling them to utilize custom chatbots they have created or choose from a variety of pre-made options seamlessly without switching between different applications.
“Gems can enhance your experience with Gemini by offering customizations that streamline your interactions, thus reducing repetitive prompts,” stated Google in an official announcement.
Users of Gemini have the ability to design versions of the chatbot to become specialists in particular tasks they frequently engage with, such as creating brand-specific marketing material or refining content for examinations. Additionally, users can upload their documents into Gems, providing the AI with context and resources tailored to specific assignments. Google also offers a selection of pre-configured Gems suitable for tasks including text editing, coding, generating sales presentations, and more.
Google provided several examples of how users can make the most of Gems in their daily work:
• Utilize a copywriting Gem for generating posts and content specifically designed for your intended audience.
• Develop a Gem that aids in sales discussions, leveraging data relevant to a specific client or industry sector.
• Use an “assistant Gem” tailored for your job role to provide pertinent summaries and materials for internal communications.
• Access a Gem designed to evaluate content from a specific perspective (e.g., C-suite executive) for crafting the most persuasive messages.
Prior to this update, Gems were exclusively available within the Gemini app. Though users cannot create custom Gems directly in Workspace applications, they can initiate the process by visiting gemini.google.com/gems/create or by selecting the “Create a new Gem” option located in the Workspace side panel. Both custom and pre-made Gems are compatible with Workspace features, including @-mentioning and file or folder access.
This update regarding Gems is being rolled out to all Google Workspace users eligible to use Gemini within the side panels of Workspace apps. Although the rollout began on July 2nd, Google has indicated that it may take “longer than 15 days” for the feature to become available to every user.
