Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone is reportedly progressing towards reality. Although the company has not announced an official launch date, sources indicate that development of the innovative device is underway. Current projections suggest that prototype testing could wrap up by late 2025, with plans to move into the Engineering Verification Test (EVT) phase soon after. If all goes according to plan, the foldable iPhone may make its debut in the latter half of next year.
Prototyping Phase Underway for Apple’s Foldable iPhone
A report from Digitimes, citing information from supply chain insiders, suggests that Apple’s foldable iPhone reached the prototype (P1) stage in June. The company is expected to adhere to a traditional development timeline for the device, moving through various prototype stages (P1 to P3) before progressing into EVT and eventually mass production. This development trajectory could lead to a possible launch by the second half of 2026.
Each prototype phase for the foldable iPhone is estimated to last approximately two months. During these intervals, Apple’s supply chain partners may conduct limited trial productions. Upon completion of these trials, the production capabilities and yield rates will be verified by iPhone assemblers Foxconn and Pegatron, laying the groundwork for large-scale manufacturing.
Initial estimates for shipments of Apple’s foldable iPhone suggest a target of around 7 million units, although this figure may fluctuate based on market reactions.
Additionally, sources indicate that Apple has been working on a foldable iPad alongside the foldable iPhone but has recently decided to postpone that project. Experts speculate that this delay stems from manufacturing hurdles, elevated production costs—particularly associated with flexible display technology—and a perceived lack of demand for larger foldable devices.
The introduction of a foldable iPhone is anticipated to intensify competition in the smartphone market, likely going head-to-head with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series, Google’s Pixel Fold, and various other foldable models from Chinese manufacturers.
Rumors suggest that the foldable iPhone may retail for approximately $2,300 (around Rs. 1,99,000) in the United States. Expected features include a liquid metal hinge, a 7.8-inch inner display, and a 5.5-inch cover display. When folded, the device could measure 9.2mm in thickness, while it may be 4.6mm thick when unfolded. Reports also indicate the inclusion of a side-mounted Touch ID sensor.
