Runway, a startup specializing in video-oriented artificial intelligence (AI), recently launched a new offering aimed at the gaming sector. Named Game World, the platform currently features a microsite that is live, but users will need to be patient before they can engage with the games. Reports indicate that the New York-based company is beginning with text and image-based gaming, with a plan to develop a comprehensive video gaming experience later this year. Additionally, the firm is reportedly in negotiations with gaming companies to integrate its technology into the game development process.
Runway Game World Enters the AI-Generated Gaming Sphere
The newly launched microsite, known as Runway Game World, is accessible online; however, it currently directs users to a login page with no functionality for game play at this time. Select journalists have received early access to the platform, as reported by Technology News. Wider user access is expected to be available next week.
At this stage, the gaming experience is relatively basic, functioning primarily as a chat interface that allows users to engage in role-playing games (RPGs) with AI-generated text and images. Cristóbal Valenzuela, the CEO of Runway, shared with Technology News that the addition of AI-generated video games is anticipated later this year.
Runway has already achieved notable advancements in AI video generation technology. In April, the company introduced the Gen 4 Turbo AI model, capable of producing a 10-second video in just 30 seconds. This technology has reportedly been utilized in projects such as Amazon’s show “House of David.”
Valenzuela expressed optimism about the potential to expedite game development, stating, “If we can help a studio make a movie 40 percent faster, then we’re probably gonna be able to help developers of games make games faster.” He noted that game developers are gaining momentum more rapidly than movie studios have in the past two years.
Additionally, Valenzuela addressed speculation regarding Meta’s interest in acquiring the startup, affirming that Runway intends to maintain its independence and continue enhancing its existing and upcoming offerings for users.
