Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has initiated the establishment of the Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), a strategic move that reportedly restructures the company’s existing Meta AI division. According to various reports, MSL will spearhead advancements in large language models (LLMs) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for Meta. The group will be led by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI, who has recently joined the organization.
A Bloomberg report indicates that Zuckerberg communicated the restructuring and the formation of MSL through a memo to Meta employees. Documentation reviewed by the publication suggests that Wang will oversee the existing AI division as part of his new role. Zuckerberg has referred to Wang as the “most impressive founder of his generation.”
In addition to Wang, Nat Friedman, the former CEO of GitHub, which is owned by Microsoft, will join him in leading MSL. Reports indicate that Meta has made a series of 11 new hires for this group, with talent sourced from prestigious competitors such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind.
Wang confirmed his appointment as Chief AI Officer of Meta in a post on X, formerly Twitter. He disclosed the identities of the 11 new team members who will collaborate with him and Friedman to form the MSL.
This new roster includes notable figures from OpenAI such as Trapit Bansal, a co-creator of the o-series models; Shuchao Bi, who contributed to the development of GPT-4o’s Voice Mode; and Huiwen Chang, recognized for co-creating GPT-4o’s image generation technology. The team also features former DeepMind and Anthropic employees. Technology News reported that each of these new recruits is reportedly compensated in the eight-figure range. Below is the complete list of members joining MSL:
