WhatsApp is in the process of introducing a new chat transfer feature aimed at making it easier for users to migrate their accounts across devices. Currently, this capability is available for Android smartphones and facilitates the direct transfer of chats and attachments from one phone to another. There are indications that the company plans to extend this feature to iOS users in the near future to ensure consistency across platforms.

A recent report from WABetaInfo, which specializes in tracking WhatsApp updates, reveals that the feature is being implemented in the latest beta version of the app for Android users. This new option allows individuals to transfer their chat histories without needing to create a backup to the cloud.

In the past, users had to back up their conversations to Google Drive before switching to a new device. While this cloud-based backup and recovery option remains available, the newly introduced chat transfer feature provides an alternative method for users. They can also choose to set up WhatsApp on their new device without retrieving older messages.

This enhancement could be particularly advantageous for users with extensive chat histories who may prefer to bypass the slow process of backing up and restoring data over the internet. The chat transfer feature could significantly expedite the transfer of conversations from an old smartphone to a newer model.

As part of the update, users will find a new option in the Chats section. To utilize this feature, they will navigate through WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Chat Transfer. Once there, the application will generate a QR code for the users to scan with the device designated for receiving the chat transfer.

At this stage, the feature is restricted to select beta users and is compatible with WhatsApp beta version 2.23.9.19 for Android. The rollout is expected to expand gradually to all Android users in the coming weeks.

In addition to this update, WhatsApp has revealed that it now allows users to connect up to four smartphones to their accounts. The primary device must authorize access for the additional devices, using a process similar to that of WhatsApp Web, which requires a QR code for sign-in. Furthermore, the company is developing an alternative authentication method based on one-time passwords (OTPs).
