Google has unveiled a new artificial intelligence feature in Sheets designed to assist users in generating text for various sections of their spreadsheets. This enhancement, powered by Google Gemini, allows users to reference specific cells to create text, summarize information, or categorize data.
In an illustrative example provided by Google, users can leverage the new AI capability to develop customized advertisement copy tailored to different target audiences outlined in their spreadsheet. To utilize this feature, users need to highlight the desired cells for AI-generated copy and input the following function, ensuring to adjust the target range according to their spreadsheet: =AI(“Write a formal ad copy for the product. Cater copy to the objective and target audience.”, A2:C2).
Another practical application involves using the AI function to summarize customer feedback contained within a range of cells. This can be executed by entering: =AI(“For the customer, write a one-sentence summary of their feedback.”, A2:D2).
Furthermore, the AI can be employed to classify customer inquiries as compliments, requests for exchanges, or return requests. Users can also utilize this feature to categorize restaurants based on their locations. A variety of examples demonstrating the AI function’s capabilities can be found on Google’s support page.
This feature enhances the existing Gemini-powered functionality in Sheets, which already provides users with the ability to answer inquiries regarding their data and create visual representations. However, the new AI function does have some restrictions. Currently, it supports only text-based responses, and it is unable to access the entirety of a spreadsheet or files within Google Drive. Additionally, users can generate outputs for a maximum of 200 selected cells at a time, requiring them to wait for processing before selecting more.
The rollout of AI functions is underway for Google Workspace users subscribed to business and enterprise plans, as well as for Gemini AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. The feature is also available to those with the Gemini Education plan or add-on.
