Elon Musk, the Chief Executive of Twitter, announced on Tuesday that the platform will soon roll out new features, including voice calls and encrypted messaging.
Musk previously indicated plans for what he termed “Twitter 2.0: The Everything App,” which he envisioned would integrate features such as encrypted direct messages, long-form tweets, and payment options.
The introduction of calling capabilities will align Twitter with major social media platforms like Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, both of which already offer similar functionalities.
In addition, Twitter announced a plan to delete and archive accounts that have remained inactive for several years, initiating a process to clean up the platform.
The specifics regarding how users could access their archived accounts have not been disclosed as of yet.
He also noted that users might notice a decrease in their follower counts due to the removal of these inactive accounts.
According to Twitter’s existing policy, users are required to log into their accounts at least once every 30 days to avoid being permanently deleted due to inactivity.
Earlier this month, Musk made headlines when he suggested he might reassign the Twitter account belonging to National Public Radio after the organization ceased posting content as a protest against a label implying government influence on its editorial coverage.
