Coca-Cola is set to unveil what it describes as the world’s first hydrogen-powered vending machines at the upcoming World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, scheduled to open on April 13, 2025. Developed in cooperation with Fuji Electric, these innovative machines operate without a traditional power outlet, utilizing replaceable hydrogen cartridges to create a chemical reaction that produces electricity, as highlighted by SoraNews24.

These vending machines will feature a slightly larger design due to an added generator module located on the side. This module is responsible for housing the hydrogen cartridges and facilitating the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, allowing for the generation of power which is subsequently stored in an internal battery.

A total of 58 of these vending machines will be installed at the Expo, with each unit equipped with an informational display designed to educate visitors about the principles of hydrogen power.

Although Coca-Cola has not disclosed the operational duration of the vending machines before hydrogen cartridge replacement becomes necessary, the elimination of a power cord potentially enables installation in a wider range of locations. Nevertheless, maintaining these machines will still require reasonable accessibility for routine upkeep. While the hydrogen fuel cell may have a longevity of several weeks, the stock of beverages inside could deplete much sooner.
