WhatsApp has addressed the Indian Government’s recent notice regarding the surge in international spam calls targeting users. The messaging platform reassured its commitment to user privacy and security, highlighting features like ‘Block’ and ‘Report’ that empower users to manage unwanted communications. Additionally, WhatsApp stated that it has enhanced its artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) systems, anticipating a reduction in the current volume of such calls by at least 50 percent.
A spokesperson for WhatsApp commented, “Our users are at the heart of everything we do, and we are fully aligned with the Government’s objective of ensuring user safety. WhatsApp leads in end-to-end encryption and is dedicated to protecting user interests.” This statement was made in response to the IT Ministry’s plans to issue the notice.
The spokesperson further elaborated, “We have swiftly improved our AI & ML systems to significantly mitigate these incidents. Our new enforcement initiatives are expected to cut the rate of unwanted calls in half, allowing us to manage the situation effectively.”
The announcement comes following remarks by Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Minister of State for IT, who indicated that the IT Ministry would take action regarding the spam calls from unfamiliar international numbers to safeguard user privacy on digital platforms.
Chandrasekhar emphasized that all digital services must be responsible and accountable for ensuring the protection of their users, referred to as ‘digital nagriks.’ He warned that any misuse or intrusions into users’ privacy would prompt an appropriate government response.
This issue gained prominence as WhatsApp users in India reported a notable increase in incoming international spam calls in recent days. Many users took to Twitter to express their frustrations, noting the calls often originated from countries such as Indonesia (+62), Vietnam (+84), Malaysia (+60), Kenya (+254), and Ethiopia (+251).
