WhatsApp has initiated testing for a new feature that allows users to edit messages in the beta versions of its app for both Android and iOS platforms. This development includes message editing capabilities on the mobile applications as well as the Web interface, with the latter’s testing starting just last week. Users participating in the beta program on either iOS or Android will now be able to modify text messages within a designated time frame, with plans for a broader rollout anticipated in the coming weeks. This update will accompany additional beta features, such as the option to silence unknown callers.
As reported by WABetaInfo, a leading source for feature tracking, the message editing option has been made available on WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.23.10.13 and WhatsApp Beta for iOS version 23.10.0.70. Confirmation of this feature has been provided by Gadgets 360 for the Android version.
Users who have updated to the latest beta builds through Google Play and Apple’s TestFlight will see a new Edit message option in the three-dot menu on Android and the long-press menu on iOS. This mirrors a recent update to the WhatsApp Web beta, which also introduced message modification capabilities.
Editing messages is limited to a time span of 15 minutes across all platforms, including iOS, Android, and Web. This timeframe aligns with Apple’s limitations for editing texts in its Messages app. However, while iMessage restricts edits to a maximum of five modifications, WhatsApp does not implement any cap on the number of edits within that time frame.
Currently, while the message editing function is being tested on Android, iOS, and Web, there has been no announcement from WhatsApp regarding its availability to all users on the stable version. It is expected to be deployed in the coming weeks alongside other features under testing, including the functionality to silence unknown callers—a likely initiative to counter the growing issue of spam and scam calls made through the messaging service.
