Google has unveiled a new Document Tabs feature designed for users of its web-based editing platform, Google Docs. This enhancement builds upon the already existing Document Outline feature, which is primarily focused on managing headlines. With the introduction of Document Tabs, users can now organize their documents more effectively, making the viewing and editing processes significantly more streamlined. This feature was initially introduced alongside several other AI-focused tools at Google’s Cloud Next 2024 event held in April.
Recently, Google Docs began the rollout of Document Tabs, which is exclusively available on the web editing platform. Previously referred to as ‘Show outline’, users will now find an updated option labeled ‘Show tabs and outlines’ upon receiving the server update.
When activated, a new column will appear on the left side of the screen, allowing users to add tabs or sections to their existing documents. This addition not only enhances functionality but also improves the overall visualization of the document, displaying its complete structure—including tabs and subtabs—more clearly. The tabbed system simplifies navigation within the document.
Initially, users will see a ‘Tab 1’, with the option to create and customize additional tabs, including adding subtabs. According to Google, these tabs can be interconnected, enabling users to share links to specific tabs rather than the entire document. Additionally, users can use emojis as part of tab headings for a more personalized touch.
The rollout of the Document Tabs feature has commenced, although Google noted that it may take up to 15 days for all users to gain access. By the complete rollout date of October 21, 2024, the feature is expected to be visible within 1-3 days. This addition will be available to all Google Workspace customers, Google Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts.
