On Thursday, Snapchat unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature that integrates its proprietary foundational video models. Named AI video Lenses, this innovative format merges Augmented Reality (AR) with generative AI, enabling users to create distinctive and engaging video effects. At present, these capabilities are limited to the platform’s premium subscription service, with three new Lenses available at launch. Snapchat intends to introduce additional Lenses on a weekly basis.
Snapchat Expands with AI Video Lenses
The announcement was made in a recent newsroom post, which elaborated on the new AI functionality. The Lenses are powered by the company’s own generative video model, initially presented during the Snap Partner Summit in September of the previous year. At that time, the AI tools were accessible exclusively to a limited number of creators in a beta version.
Now, Snapchat is broadening access to this technology for a wider audience. The AI video Lenses will be offered to Snapchat Platinum subscribers, the platform’s highest-tier subscription, which costs Rs. 99 per month. Subscribers enjoy an ad-free experience and various other exclusive features.
Focusing on the newly launched AI video Lenses, Snapchat revealed that three options are currently being provided. The first two, named “Raccoon” and “Fox,” allow users to add animated representations of these animals into their Snaps, creating the illusion of them interacting with the user. The third Lens, titled “Spring Flowers,” generates a zoom-out effect, revealing a person in the shot holding a significant bouquet of flowers. While only a handful of Lenses are available at launch, the company affirms that more will follow shortly.
Snapchat Platinum subscribers will discover these Lenses positioned at the forefront of the Lens carousel. They can also be located by searching the names provided. To experience the effects, users must select a Lens and then capture a Snap using either the rear or the front-facing camera.
According to the company, there may be a brief delay while the videos are rendered in full, but users can continue using the platform during that time without facing a loading screen. Once the video generation is finished, the AI-created content will be automatically saved to Memories, allowing users to share it with friends or post it to Stories and Spotlight.
