WhatsApp is once again testing a new feature aimed at enhancing group chat functionality on Android devices, featured in its latest beta release. The messaging application previously launched a beta test introducing profile images alongside messages in group chats; however, this feature was later disabled. In addition, the app, which is owned by Meta, has started to unveil the initial version of its Updates tab for beta testers on iOS. Alongside these enhancements, WhatsApp is also focusing on visual upgrades for Android, including a revamped emoji keyboard and new Material You-style toggles in its settings.

The introduction of profile icons in group chats was highlighted by feature tracker WABetaInfo in the 2.23.12.7 version of WhatsApp beta for Android. Users who have updated to this version can now view profile pictures of all group members, with standard “generic” icons displayed for those without a custom image. Gadgets 360 confirmed that this feature is active in the latest beta iteration for Android smartphones.

Initially seen in development last year, the group profile icon feature had a brief rollout to beta testers before it was retracted. Users updating to the current beta version for Android can expect to see the profile pictures of group participants, facilitating easier identification of message senders.

In other developments, WhatsApp has been observed working on Material You-themed toggles for various settings in version 2.23.12.3. This update introduces larger toggles with a green accent in the settings panel, consistent with Google’s Material Design 3 specifications to indicate the activation of various options.

Meanwhile, WABetaInfo has also identified a new Updates tab in version 23.11.0.70 of WhatsApp beta for iOS. This feature is still under development and is anticipated to replace the existing Status tab, providing users with access to both Channels and Status updates. Additionally, WhatsApp is reportedly creating a broadcast-style feature aimed at facilitating one-way communication with subscribers of Channels.

WhatsApp is also focusing on additional enhancements for its emoji keyboard, which is currently in the works. Changes include repositioning the three buttons that allow switching between GIFs, stickers, and emojis to the top of the respective section, according to WABetaInfo.
