WhatsApp is currently testing a new feature that allows users to send video messages on beta versions of its app for both iOS and Android platforms. This addition will enable users to quickly record and forward video clips in chats, similar to the existing voice message functionality. The video messages will not disappear after being viewed, remaining accessible in the conversation history.

According to WABetaInfo, a notable tracker of WhatsApp features, the new functionality is found in version 23.12.0.71 for iOS and version 2.23.13.4 for Android. Users will locate the video message option in the chat bar at the bottom of the screen, positioned alongside attachment and camera buttons, as well as the WhatsApp Pay icon where applicable. This feature will replace the microphone icon located in the bottom-right corner of the interface.

Users can initiate a video message by tapping the microphone icon, which will then switch to a camera icon, allowing for the recording of a video clip lasting up to 60 seconds. According to the information from WABetaInfo, upon receiving a video message, users can tap it once to enlarge the view and activate audio playback, which is muted by default.

The testing platform Gadgets 360 was unable to verify the feature on the latest Android version of WhatsApp. Nonetheless, it is anticipated that the rollout will expand to more users in the forthcoming weeks.

As with text messages and other forms of communication like voice and video calls on WhatsApp, the new video message feature is secured by end-to-end encryption. This means that users cannot share video messages with other chats, as they can only be constructed using the phone’s camera. However, recipients could potentially record their screens to share any video messages in different chats or groups.

In addition to this feature, WhatsApp recently introduced Channels, a one-to-many broadcasting system that allows users on the platform to subscribe for updates. This enables individuals and organizations to share various announcements, including discounts, sports scores, or weather information with their followers.

During its annual developer conference, Apple presented its first mixed reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro, alongside new Mac models and software updates. A discussion of the major announcements made by Apple at WWDC 2023 is available on Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast. Orbital can be accessed on Spotify, Gaana, JioSaavn, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, and on various podcast platforms.
