Threads is initiating a testing phase for a new feature that allows users to conceal images or text containing spoilers. This announcement was made by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Users can blur content by tapping on an image or highlighting text and selecting the “mark spoiler” option.
To view the concealed content, other users can simply tap or click on the designated spoiler. This feature mirrors similar capabilities found on platforms like Reddit, which also allows posts or comments to be hidden using a “spoiler” tag. The introduction of this functionality on another platform is welcomed, especially considering the common frustration of encountering unexpected spoilers while scrolling.
A Meta spokesperson, Alec Booker, informed Technology News that this test is being conducted globally, although the specifics regarding the number of users who will have access to it remain unspecified.
The appearance of spoilers will vary based on the device being used. On desktop versions of the application, spoilers are obscured by a gray block, while on mobile devices, they are concealed behind a series of floating dots, as demonstrated in the attached GIF. Booker stated, “This feature is currently optimized for mobile, but we’re working to improve the experience for desktop.”
