On Wednesday, Meta unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool designed specifically for video editing. This innovative feature enables users to enhance their short-form videos by utilizing preset templates that can alter backgrounds, apply effects to subjects, and even change clothing styles. Currently available for free for a limited time, this AI editing tool can be accessed through the Meta AI app, the Meta.AI website, and the recently launched Edits app. The rollout of these AI templates is occurring in select countries, with plans to introduce additional features later this year.
In a post shared on their newsroom, Meta highlighted the introduction of the new video editing capability. Notably, this feature is built on the Movie Gen AI model, which Instagram Head Adam Mosseri previewed in a Reel last year. In that video, he demonstrated editing various video elements, including backgrounds, foregrounds, and subject modifications through text prompts.
Currently, the AI-driven video editing tool does not support text prompts; however, Meta has stated that users will soon be able to “edit videos alongside Meta AI with your own text prompts to make your video edits exactly as you imagine them.”
The new feature allows users to select from over 50 preset AI prompts, enabling them to create effects such as making it look like a video was filmed in a desert, dressing a subject in a tuxedo, or transforming the footage into an animated style. It is important to note that, for now, the editing functionality is limited to the first 10 seconds of videos.
While Meta has confirmed that the feature is being rolled out in the Meta AI app, Meta.AI website, and the Edits app in the United States and “more than a dozen countries globally,” the staff at Gadgets 360 have not yet observed its availability. There is also uncertainty regarding whether India is among the countries receiving this new feature.
For those who do have access, edited videos can be shared directly to Facebook and Instagram through the Meta AI and Edits app. Users also have the option to share their creations to the Discover feed within the Meta AI app and website.
