Meta, the parent company of Facebook, reported that the platform addressed only about 27 percent of user complaints in May 2023, while Instagram managed to respond to less than half of the issues raised by its users during the same period, according to the latest India Monthly Report.
The number of individual complaints on Facebook increased significantly, more than doubling to 16,995, while Instagram saw a rise of over 68 percent in grievances compared to the previous month.
According to the data released by Meta, Facebook took action on less than ten percent of reports concerning users’ claims of being depicted in partial nudity or sexual acts.
For Instagram, the platform responded to approximately half of the total user reports relating to violations of its policy concerning nudity and sexual content.
The transparency report indicated that action rates for other report categories on Facebook were particularly low. Complaints about “bullying or harassment” saw a response rate of under seven percent, while responses for “inappropriate or abusive content” hovered around eight percent. Users reporting fake profiles experienced a slightly better rate, with action taken on about 48 percent of those complaints.
Facebook received 16,995 reports from users and was able to provide resolution tools for 2,325 of these cases.
“Out of the remaining 14,670 reports that required specialized review, we evaluated the content according to our policies and took action on 2,299 reports overall,” the report detailed.
However, specific details regarding the types of actions taken on the 2,299 additional reports were not disclosed by Facebook.
Instagram reported receiving 16,267 user grievances, acting on 6,499 of these incidents, which included 2,671 reports subjected to specialized review.
Instagram’s response tools were accessible in only about five percent of cases involving hacked accounts, and approximately 50 percent of users reporting content showing them in nudity or sexual acts received assistance.
Details regarding the categories or policies pertaining to the 2,671 reports were not included in the company’s report.
Additionally, Meta acted on two orders from the Grievances Appellate Committee (GAC), an entity that reviews complaints from users dissatisfied with the resolutions provided by social media platforms.
