Snap has revealed plans to introduce a consumer version of its augmented reality (AR) smart glasses, named ‘Specs,’ scheduled for launch next year. The parent company of Snapchat, a platform focusing on video and photo messaging, has previously released five generations of AR glasses exclusively for developers. The upcoming Specs are expected to incorporate machine learning capabilities and an AI assistant, allowing users to share games with others. Integration with the Snapchat app is also anticipated.
Snap OS Enhanced with OpenAI and Gemini on Google Cloud
During the ongoing Augmented World Expo 2025 in California, Snap’s CEO, Evan Spiegel, announced the planned release of the AR smart glasses, Specs, in 2026. These glasses will mark Snap’s first entry into the consumer smart glasses market, described by Spiegel as a “wearable computer integrated into a lightweight pair of glasses.”
Snap has invested approximately $3 billion (around Rs. 25,650 crore) over the past eleven years in the development of AR glasses. The fifth-generation model was launched last year but was limited to developer access.
The upcoming Specs will be powered by Snap’s proprietary Snap OS, featuring support for “three-dimensional” AI assistance. While specific technical details about Specs remain undisclosed, further information is expected to emerge in the coming months.
The previous developer-only model was equipped with two Snapdragon chips and a battery capable of delivering 45 minutes of usage per charge, along with titanium vapor chambers designed for improved thermal management.
Snap OS has undergone several updates, enhancing its capabilities with integrations for OpenAI and Gemini on Google Cloud. Developers can utilize AI-enabled Lenses within Snapchat for functionalities such as currency conversion, text translation, and recipes based on visible ingredients. The company will also provide new tools like the Depth Module, Snap3D, and Automatic Speech Recognition APIs for developers.
