Meta has unveiled a new feature that simplifies the process for WhatsApp users to move their chat histories from an old phone to a new one, eliminating the need for backups or cloud services. This capability is now available for both Android and iOS users, allowing the transfer of chat histories along with media files between devices operating on the same operating system. Previously, transferring chat histories required backing up information either to local storage or cloud services.
The updated chat transfer feature utilizes a QR code to facilitate the movement of essential chat data, such as messages and media files, including documents, links, and videos. However, it’s worth noting that peer-to-peer payment details and call logs cannot be transferred through this method.
For users looking to transfer their WhatsApp chat history using the new QR code feature, their devices must run on Android OS Lollipop 5.1 or higher, or Android 6 and above. The new phone must not be registered on WhatsApp at the time of transfer, and both devices should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
iOS users also have specific requirements, as both the old and new iPhones must have WhatsApp for iOS version 2.23.9.77 or later installed to successfully transfer chat histories.
Here’s how users can transfer their WhatsApp chat history on both Android and iOS phones.
Transfer WhatsApp Chat History on Android Phone

On the old phone, open WhatsApp and navigate to More Options > Settings > Chats > Transfer Chats > Start.

Install WhatsApp on the new phone and register it using the same phone number.

On the new device, select Start to begin transferring chat history from the old phone.

Allow permissions to access the connection, and a QR code will be generated. Use your old device to scan this code.

Once permission is granted for the connection, the transfer process will initiate.

After the import is complete, tap Done.
Transfer WhatsApp Chat History on iOS Device
- Open WhatsApp on the old iPhone and go to Settings > Chats > Transfer Chats to iPhone > Start.
- On the new iPhone, install WhatsApp and register it using your phone number.
- Tap Continue on the option to transfer chat history to iPhone.
- Use the camera on your old phone to scan the QR code displayed on the new device.
- After the transfer is finalized, set up your profile on the new phone.
