Google has begun publicly testing its Search Live feature in AI Mode, with users on both Android and iOS starting to notice the new functionality in the Google app. This feature was first unveiled at the company’s I/O 2025 keynote as an addition to the AI Mode, enabling users to engage in real-time voice conversations with the Search tool. While it can also utilize the camera feed to respond to queries based on visual input, this camera functionality is currently unavailable for users.

Google Reportedly Testing Search Live in AI Mode

A report from 9to5Google indicates that the tech giant based in Mountain View is actively testing the Search Live feature. Staff from the publication gained access to the feature on iOS after signing up for Search Labs. It is important to note that AI Mode is presently restricted to users in the United States, with no announcements made regarding its expansion to other countries.

Users who have gained access to the feature can now see a new waveform icon located under the search bar in the Google app. This icon features a small sparkle reminiscent of Gemini, taking the place of the previous Google Lens shortcut which directed users to their gallery.

When this icon is tapped, it reveals a full-screen interface for Search Live, resembling Gemini Live but with two buttons at the bottom for muting and checking the conversation transcript. Once the interface is active, users can verbally pose their questions to the AI, which will respond accordingly.

Additionally, users can access Search Live by tapping a circular icon with a magnifying glass and sparkle, which leads to AI Mode. Within this mode, the waveform icon can be found on the right side of the text input field. Search Live currently offers four voice options—Cosmo, Neso, Terra, and Cassini—that can be selected from a menu.

Upon receiving a query, the AI displays a list of websites that contributed to its response. Search Live is designed to enhance user interaction by prompting further questions to refine the query and deliver more pertinent answers, allowing users to ask follow-up questions as well.

The Search Live feature can function in the background, enabling users to leave the interface and return to the home screen while continuing to ask questions. At this time, there is no information regarding when Google intends to roll out AI Mode and Search Live to additional regions.
