Google Chrome has achieved an unprecedented score on the Speedometer 3 test, according to a recent announcement on the company’s blog. This benchmark assessment is utilized to evaluate browser performance, with Google’s open-source engine typically leading the charge among top performers. The company noted a 10 percent enhancement in Chrome’s performance since August 2024, coinciding with the update to Speedometer 3.1, which is now the standard for measuring performance.

Chrome’s Performance Sees 10 Percent Boost Since August 2024

Thomas Nattestad, a Product Manager for Chrome, stated in the blog entry that the team concentrated on “refining fundamental rendering paths across the entire stack.” These improvements have contributed to the browser’s 10 percent performance increase on the Speedometer 3 test since August 2024. Google’s open-source Blink rendering engine is also employed by several other browsers, including Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Vivaldi.

Chrome’s stable version 137 scored 51.43 points on the Speedometer 3 benchmark, while the beta version 138 and development version 139 recorded scores of 51.83 and 52.35 points, respectively. Google has shared a graph illustrating the steady improvement in scores across recent versions.

The Speedometer 3 benchmark was executed on a MacBook Pro equipped with an M4 chip and macOS 15. This benchmark, which assesses browser performance, has been developed collaboratively by a consortium that includes Apple, Google, Intel, Microsoft, and Mozilla. However, not all browser developers routinely disclose their scores from the Speedometer assessments.

To enhance Chrome’s performance, the team analyzed the workloads associated with the Speedometer 3 test, which evaluates the responsiveness of a browser’s rendering engine. Google also examined the functions that consumed the most time in Chrome, which facilitated “targeted optimisations” to the browser’s engine, including enhancements in garbage collection, optimization of code, and adjustment of workloads. Technical users can access further details regarding these improvements in the blog post.

Following these enhancements, Chrome’s score has risen by 10 percent since August 2024. Additionally, the company revealed a significant increase of 72 percent in Chrome’s Speedometer 3 score since May 2022. Nevertheless, Google has yet to share specifics regarding Chrome’s performance on the newly introduced Speedometer 3.1, which has replaced the previous version of the benchmark.
