Sony hosted its latest State of Play broadcast on Wednesday, showcasing fresh updates and trailers for upcoming titles on the PS5. The event included unexpected reveals and a new PlayStation controller, although there were no announcements regarding Insomniac Games’ Wolverine or Santa Monica Studio’s forthcoming projects. The presentation emphasized upcoming games from Japanese developers and featured the announcement of 007 First Light, an anticipated James Bond title from IO Interactive, slated for release on PC and consoles in 2026.

During the broadcast, Sony confirmed five additional levels for Astro Bot and provided updated release dates for previously announced games. A remastered version of a classic Final Fantasy title was also introduced. Additionally, Sony indicated that a dedicated State of Play event focusing on Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yotei will take place next month.

Arguably the most significant first-party announcement was Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, a fighting game developed in partnership with Arc System Works, known for its work on titles like Guilty Gear and Granblue Fantasy Versus. This tag-team fighting experience will allow players to engage with a diverse cast of Marvel superheroes and features the unique art style characteristic of the studio.

Sony also shared news about new additions to PlayStation Plus, including a day-one launch on the Game Catalog for August. The PS2 edition of Deus Ex will be added on June 17, while Twisted Metal 3 and Twisted Metal 4 are being included in the PS Plus Premium’s Classics Catalog on July 15. Furthermore, users of PS Plus Premium will have access to original PlayStation versions of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis later this summer. Sony introduced its first wireless fight stick, codenamed Project Defiant, designed specifically for fighting games. This controller will connect wirelessly to PS5 and PC via PlayStation Link or through a wired option, with a planned launch in 2026.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls

This new 4v4 tag-team fighting game is set to be launched on PS5 and PC in 2026, developed by Arc System Works alongside Marvel Games. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls reinterprets iconic superheroes such as Captain America and Spider-Man, presenting them in a fresh artistic style as they face off in various arenas.

The game aims to innovate the fighting genre with accessible 4v4 matchups characterized by user-friendly controls and vibrant visuals. It promises to engage both newcomers to fighting games and seasoned players with its depth and complexity. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is expected to arrive on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store in 2026.

Nioh 3

Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja announced Nioh 3 during the broadcast. This sequel to the 2020 title Nioh 2 allows players to engage in combat using two distinct styles—samurai and ninja. The samurai style prioritizes traditional melee combat, while the ninja style emphasizes agility and aerial maneuvers, allowing players to switch styles seamlessly.

Nioh 3 promises to deliver signature Yokai boss encounters, expansive exploration, intricate combat mechanics, and a narrative rooted in Japan’s historic Sengoku period. The game is scheduled for release in early 2026 on PS5 and PC, with a demo currently available on PS5.

Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles

Square Enix unveiled Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles, an enhanced version of the beloved PlayStation title from 1990. This updated iteration includes fully voiced dialogue, an optimized UI, graphical enhancements, and several quality-of-life improvements.

The new release will also feature a classic mode for those who wish to experience the original version. The turn-based RPG will be made available on multiple platforms, including PC (via Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch, and is now open for pre-orders.

Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection

The presentation highlighted several surprises for fans of fighting games, including the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection. This compilation features the original versions of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 3, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, meticulously restored by Digital Eclipse. The collection will also include various home console versions from the 16-bit era.

All restored titles will support online play with rollback netcode, according to Digital Eclipse. Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is expected to launch on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2 later this year.

Romeo is a Dead Man

Grasshopper Manufacture revealed their upcoming title Romeo is a Dead Man, a graphic action game packed with intense melee combat. The gameplay trailer introduced players to Romeo Stargazer, a special agent caught in a battle between life and death. Set across various universes, as “Dead Man,” Romeo is tasked with capturing notorious fugitives.
