LG Display, a subsidiary of a prominent South Korean conglomerate specializing in display technology, has introduced an innovative stretchable display capable of expanding to 150% of its original size. The unveiling took place last week at LG Science Park in Seoul, where the company gathered over 100 participants from various sectors, including industry, academia, and research.
LG Display Unveils New Stretchable Panel Prototype
In a recent news release, LG Display elaborated on the features of this new technology. The firm asserts that its achievement of a 50 percent elongation is the highest in the industry. Demonstrated during the event was a 12-inch panel that can stretch to an impressive 18 inches while maintaining high-resolution image quality with 100 pixels per inch (PPI) and a full red-blue-green (RGB) color spectrum.
The new display model reportedly outperforms the initial stretchable panel introduced in 2022, which only managed a 20 percent expansion. The advancements stem from improvements in a specialized silicon material substrate, previously used in contact lenses, alongside a new wiring design that enhances elongation capabilities.
Additionally, LG Display highlighted enhancements in durability through the utilization of a microLED light source measuring just 40 micrometers. This innovation allows the stretchable display to withstand over 10,000 stretches while preserving image quality, even under extreme temperatures and external impacts.
Stretchable displays represent a breakthrough in free-form screen technology, allowing for transformation into various shapes through stretching, folding, and twisting. Their lightweight and thin design makes them suitable for irregular and curved surfaces, including textiles and skin. The company anticipates applications in numerous industries, including fashion, wearable technology, and automotive.
During the event, LG Display presented multiple applications for the prototype. Notable displays included an automotive panel molded into a convex shape with touch interaction capabilities, as well as a wearable display integrated into firefighters’ uniforms to provide real-time data.
