On May 23, President Trump signed an executive order titled “Restoring Gold Standard Science.” The document addresses critical issues such as the reproducibility of research and conflicts of interest, striking a surprisingly positive tone. While certain phrases could have been crafted more effectively, the overall language used in relation to fundamental scientific practices was commendably coherent.

However, there was hesitation in reporting what seemed to be a notable development. This reluctance stemmed from the order’s framework, which poses challenges regarding accountability for its implementation. This complexity made it difficult to frame an appropriate narrative. Fortunately, clarity emerged just a week later, shedding light on the potential dangers associated with the order when a Trump administration official showcased its most concerning aspects.

On a recent Sunday news program, FDA Commissioner Marty Makary fielded questions regarding the choice to restrict COVID vaccine access for pregnant individuals. The host referred to a comprehensive analysis involving over 1.8 million women, which indicated that the vaccine was both safe and effective.

Makary dismissed this extensive data, arguing that it did not meet the criteria of “gold standard science,” highlighting how this term can mislead the public regarding scientific legitimacy.

Establishing Criteria

The executive order outlines multiple definitions of gold standard science that align with discussions promoted by the scientific community, including organizations associated with the open science movement. Key components include reproducibility, the formulation of falsifiable hypotheses, transparent sharing of results and uncertainties, and an emphasis on collaborative research efforts. Additionally, it enforces clear standards, such as prohibiting federal employees from engaging in research misconduct.

In general, the principles of gold standard science articulated in the order range from self-evident and harmless to significantly beneficial in advancing scientific practice.
