YouTube is set to introduce the Lens feature to its Shorts video format, with a beta rollout expected in the coming weeks. This new functionality will allow viewers to seek more information about animals, plants, and objects featured in the videos.

For instance, when watching a Short that includes a famous landmark, users can utilize Lens to conduct a search for that specific site, gaining insights into the video’s filming location.

To access this feature, users should access Shorts through the YouTube mobile app. By pausing the video and tapping on the Lens button in the upper menu, viewers can circle, highlight, or tap the item they wish to investigate further. YouTube will then display visual matches and search results directly on the Short, allowing users to return seamlessly to their viewing experience after selecting a result.

In recent months, Google has been enhancing the Lens functionality to include video search capabilities, further aiming to assist users in making informed purchase decisions while shopping.

YouTube has clarified that Lens does not incorporate “biometric facial recognition” for identifying individuals; however, results may include “notable public figures.” Additionally, advertisements will not appear in search results during the initial testing phase, and the feature will not be available for Shorts containing shopping affiliate links at this stage.
