Google Workspace users can expect to encounter enhanced functionality within Gmail, as the platform introduces automatic email summarization powered by its Gemini AI. This new feature will produce summaries for intricate email threads and display them above the original messages.

Previously, AI-generated summaries have been available in Google Workspace accounts since last year; however, users were required to manually activate them. With this update, Gmail’s AI now autonomously determines when a summary is beneficial, creating them for lengthy threads and messages containing multiple replies without user intervention. The summaries will also refresh automatically with each new reply received.

The automatic summaries will initially be available for English-language emails on mobile devices, with a rollout period of up to two weeks for individual accounts. As of now, Google has not disclosed whether or when this feature will extend to the desktop version of Gmail or to free users of the service.

If Gmail’s automatic summarization does not trigger for a particular email, users still have the option to request a summary manually, maintaining the functionality that has existed previously. For those who prefer to disable these features, Gmail allows users to turn off all AI integrations by modifying the “Smart features” setting within the app.
