During TwitchCon Europe, the platform unveiled several key updates, notably the introduction of vertical livestreams and the kickoff of an open beta that enables creators to stream at higher resolutions.
The addition of vertical streams aims to enhance the viewing experience for users on mobile devices by facilitating portrait mode livestreams. Streamers will no longer have to choose exclusively between vertical or horizontal formats; Twitch plans to allow streaming in both formats simultaneously. Testing for this feature will commence with a select number of channels during the upcoming summer, with broader implementation expected later in the year.
Furthermore, Twitch is launching an open beta for “2k streaming,” which permits creators to broadcast in 1440p resolution. This enhancement, available to all Twitch partners and affiliates, promises to deliver a significant upgrade over the current 1080p streaming, featuring enhanced detail, improved clarity, and superior performance across various content types, including gaming, art, and casual chats. Previously, this capability had been restricted to a limited beta phase.
Another new feature being introduced is the ability to rewind streams, which will be beneficial for viewers who may miss content while a streamer is live or wish to revisit certain moments. This functionality will initially be tested among a smaller group of users this summer.
Twitch CEO Dan Clancy previously hinted at the vertical streaming and other forthcoming updates in a letter released in February, outlining the platform’s vision for 2025.
