CD Projekt has confirmed that pre-production for the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 has officially begun. On Wednesday, the company revealed that the game would be moving forward under the title Cyberpunk 2, having dropped its former codename, Project Orion. The definitive title for the sequel at launch has yet to be clarified. The announcement of the game’s development, which began in 2022, indicated that CD Projekt Red’s North American studio in Boston is at the helm of the project.

‘Cyberpunk 2’ Moves into Pre-Production Phase

The Polish gaming giant shared this update in its first-quarter 2025 earnings report, confirming that the game has transitioned beyond its conceptual phase.

In its financial disclosure, CD Projekt stated, “Several weeks ago, the CD PROJEKT RED team responsible for the next major installment in the Cyberpunk universe completed the concept phase. Quantum Cyberpunk 2, previously referred to as Project Orion, has now moved into preproduction.”

While the game was first introduced as Project Orion, the change to Cyberpunk 2 signifies its place as an installment in the larger Cyberpunk narrative. However, CD Projekt Red’s senior PR manager, Ola Sondej, clarified to Technology News that this new designation does not guarantee it will be the final title.

According to an earnings presentation slide, the team working on Cyberpunk 2 has expanded from 84 members in February to 96 by the end of April. The company is concurrently developing multiple projects, with the majority of its 730 employees focused on The Witcher 4. This next entry, which entered full-scale production in November 2024, now employs 422 developers. Project Sirius, a multiplayer spin-off of The Witcher, has a team of 48, while 19 staff members are dedicated to a new intellectual property named Project Hadar.

Although a release timeframe for Cyberpunk 2 has not been disclosed, it appears that fans will have to wait several years for its arrival. CD Projekt remains reticent about the game’s specifics, but some intriguing unverified information has surfaced.

This month, Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith mentioned that the sequel will introduce a second city alongside Night City, the primary setting of the first installment. He noted that this new urban environment can be likened to “Chicago gone wrong.”

Phantom Liberty Exceeds 10 Million Copies Sold

In the same earnings report, CD Projekt revealed that sales for the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion, Phantom Liberty, have exceeded 10 million copies. The company expressed satisfaction with this achievement, especially with another addition to the Cyberpunk lineup set for release on June 5, when the Ultimate Edition will be available for the new Nintendo Switch 2 console.

The studio also highlighted that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary on May 19, has sold over 60 million copies, securing its status as one of the best-selling games of all time.

CD Projekt reported consolidated sales revenue of approximately PLN 226 million (around 514 crore), with a net profit of roughly PLN 86 million (approximately Rs. 195 crore) for the first quarter of 2025.
