Kaiser Permanente, a prominent healthcare provider, is currently facing a significant system outage, which has led to hospitals and pharmacies reverting to manual processes for filling prescriptions. This technical issue is also causing slowdowns across various services within the organization.
In a statement to Technology News, spokesperson Kathleen Campini Chambers reported, “Kaiser Permanente is currently experiencing network interruptions at one of our data centers, affecting some of our applications. While all clinical facilities are operational, members may encounter delays in services such as lab, radiology, and pharmacy both online and in-person. We apologize for any inconvenience. Our technical teams are diligently working to resolve the issue at the earliest. Members can visit kp.org for updates.”
Kaiser Permanente is also posting alerts on its regional websites, including those for Northern California and Oregon / SW Washington. The company noted, “At this time, you may not be able to access some features on our site, including e-visits, billing, message center, and records.”
One staff member from Technology News experienced the disruption firsthand while attempting to fill a prescription at a Kaiser hospital pharmacy. The employee reported that all pharmacy systems were offline, including payment terminals, necessitating the use of manual forms to process prescriptions. Pharmacy staff indicated that wait times could extend to an hour for a simple prescription due to the ongoing issues.
A thread on Reddit has surfaced, detailing similar problems reported by individuals in areas such as Southern California and Maryland. Kaiser Permanente has been actively responding to users on X, confirming awareness of the system outages and assuring that it is “working to restore services as soon as possible.”
