Google is reportedly enhancing its Gemini chatbot by simplifying the process of selecting and sharing text. A recent report indicates that the tech giant is developing a feature that will enable users to long-press and drag to choose specific segments of text directly, facilitating quicker sharing with other applications. This enhancement would streamline the current method, which requires users to navigate through several steps to select responses from Gemini.

Google Introduces a User-Friendly Update to Gemini

According to a report by Android Authority, the company based in Mountain View is working on this new capability to enable direct text selection within the Gemini app’s chat interface. The feature was found in the latest beta version of the Google app (version 16.20.48.sa.arm64), though it is not yet active, meaning that beta testers cannot currently utilize it.

At present, users must follow a convoluted process to select text within the Gemini mobile app. While there is an option to copy all text at once represented by an icon of two blank pages next to the share button, selecting just part of the text requires several steps. Users must either long-press the text or tap a three-dotted icon to reveal the Select text option, which directs them to a separate screen for text selection.

This multi-step process can be a source of frustration, especially for those needing to copy several sections repeatedly. The forthcoming feature promises to alleviate this issue by allowing text selection directly within the chat window, thus minimizing the number of taps required. It is expected to function with paragraph-style responses, but users may only be able to select a single bullet point at a time, potentially complicating the sharing of bulleted information.

It’s worth mentioning that this feature surfaced during an APK teardown process and was identified within the Google app’s code. However, its existence does not guarantee its eventual release or that it will remain unchanged. It is common for developers to abandon experimental features or modify them significantly before launch. Until Google provides an official announcement regarding the feature, its status should be approached with caution.
