Ubisoft unveiled an extensive 13-minute gameplay showcase for Assassin’s Creed Shadows during its Ubisoft Forward event on Monday, highlighting the game’s dual protagonists and their unique playstyles. The gameplay walkthrough featured both open combat sequences and stealth mechanics, focusing on Naoe and Yasuke as they collaborate on a mission set in the historic castle town of Fukuchiyama located in Japan’s Tamba Province. Players can also anticipate vibrant towns and villages within the game environment.

Game Mechanics of Assassin’s Creed Shadows

The gameplay demo kicked off with Yasuke, a formidable samurai clad in heavy armor, as he enters Fukuchiyama in pursuit of a corrupt daimyo. Demonstrating his strength, Yasuke confronts a group of samurai that are troubling local villagers. He swiftly overwhelms his adversaries, employing a combination of a club and sword to efficiently take them down.

Yasuke’s skill set revolves around direct combat, enabling him to face multiple opponents simultaneously. Although he lacks agility, his sheer power allows him to dominate his foes. This combat style aligns with the action-RPG elements found in recent installments like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

The Dual Protagonists of Assassin’s Creed Shadows

In response to the preferences of dedicated fans, Ubisoft is intensifying the focus on stealth and assassination tactics in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. This aspect is embodied by Naoe, a shinobi who operates in the shadows, employing agile parkour capabilities and stealth-oriented tools to accomplish her objectives.

Players can switch between the two protagonists freely in open-world exploration, while specific missions will require players to decide which character to utilize, influencing whether to confront foes head-on or opt for a quieter approach. During the demonstration, Naoe stealthily infiltrates Fukuchiyama castle, making use of her grappling hook, kunai, and customized Hidden Blade for a tactical assassination of the daimyo.

The stealth elements showcased in Shadows hark back to the franchise’s earlier titles, as well as to the recent Assassin’s Creed Mirage. With its dual protagonists providing varied playstyles, this upcoming entry in the franchise appears to be catering to the desires of both longtime Assassin’s Creed devotees and those drawn to the action-RPG facets of recent releases.

Set in feudal Japan in the 16th century, Assassin’s Creed Shadows invites players to explore a vast open world, featuring diverse landscapes and seasonal changes. The game is slated for release on November 15, available on PC (via the Ubisoft Store and Epic Games Store), PS5, and Xbox Series S/X, with a version also set to launch on Mac computers with Apple silicon via the Mac App Store.
