A new mysterious device currently under development by OpenAI and former Apple designer Jony Ive is said to be compact, context-aware, and screen-free, distancing itself from wearable technologies. Details emerged during an internal meeting led by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, which was later summarized by The Wall Street Journal. The announcement follows OpenAI’s recent $6.5 billion acquisition of Ive’s AI hardware startup, io.
Altman indicated that the acquisition has the potential to elevate OpenAI’s value significantly, forecasting an increase of up to $1 trillion. He elaborated on the vision for a “family of devices” resulting from this collaboration. While development details of the inaugural device, slated for a late 2026 release, remain closely guarded to prevent competitive replication, some insights were provided during the call.
Among the hints shared by Altman were characteristics that could define user expectations. He stated that the device will be discreet, fully aware of its user’s environment, and intended to complement existing tech gadgets like the MacBook Pro and iPhone, forming a “third core device” on a desk. Anticipation surrounds the product, with Altman pledging it will achieve a shipping milestone faster than any previous device reaching 100 million units.
The conversation also clarified what the device will not be. Altman confirmed it will not be glasses, and that Ive is not inclined towards creating a wearable product, expressing critical views on the Humane AI Pin.
